Herbert P. ''Tim'' Jones Music Scholarship

Herbert P. ''Tim'' Jones, 77, of Zanesville, died peacefully at 1:55 AM, Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Cambridge Health & Rehab Center following a lengthy illness.

He was born Tuesday, December 27, 1938 in Zanesville, the son of Donald Pitt Jones and Betty (Ballard) Jones. He was married to Marlene G (Wiseman) Jones on Saturday, September 2, 1961 and was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Tim, also known as ''T.J.'' served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy. During his tenure in the Navy he served on the USS McClelland (DE-750) a Cannon-Class Destroyer escort. During his childhood he was a Cub Scout, Boy Scout earning Eagle Scout in 1952. He attended Lincoln School, Roosevelt Junior High, spent one year at Lash High School and graduated in 1956 from Zanesville High School. During Tim's time at ZHS he was one of the original members of the Blue Knights. He also attended Muskingum College. While attending Muskingum College, Tim was in the marching band and was a member of the Sphinx Club.

He was a realtor for Jack Spence and F.W. Fox and worked in the Legal Department of the Ohio Department of Transportation, District 5. Tim was very musically talented, there were few instruments he could not play, for over 35 years he played the drums, piano and flute. Tim played in many area bands including, Shelly Carlisle Band, and played background for Mary Lucas, Ray Richardson Combo and Jayquets Combo.

Tim was a member of the B.O.P.E. for over 35 years, Public Employee Retirees, Chapter 47, Zanesville Museum of Art, American Legion Post 29, Men's Auxiliary, VFW, Post 1058 and the Musical Union where he served on the board. Tim enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, golf, concerts and stage plays. He loved to travel; he was able to travel the United States visiting all but 3 states and many foreign countries. During his sea travels he enjoyed many ocean going vessels including the QE II.

  • REQUIREMENTS
  • Applicants must be a graduating high school senior attending a Muskingum County high school or a current college student (undergraduate or graduate) pursuing higher education opportunities in music performance or music education at Muskingum University or Ohio University for the upcoming school year. The applicant must have at least a 2.5 GPA and have been active in music during high school.
