James McCandlish Memorial Scholarship

Jim was an art teacher and coach at Zanesville High School for more than 30 years, and was one of the most beloved figures at ZHS.

He graduated from ZHS in 1967, after participating in marching band, dance band, orchestra, and the senior play. He was also president of Student Council. Jim graduated from Ohio University in 1971, earning a bachelors degree in fine arts, and he then obtained his teaching certificate in 1973 from Ohio Dominican University.

Jim began his career at Hancock Junior High in 1974, where he also coached the boys basketball team. In 1980, he moved to ZHS, and he took over the Lady Devils basketball program the following year. He twice led ZHS to the regional tournament, and his 1981-82 team won the school’s first-ever Central Ohio League title. Jim also started a booster club, designed a team logo, and started the elementary school program.

He left the ZHS?program in 1985 but returned to coaching in 1989 at Roosevelt Junior High. He stayed in that post until 1992, when he returned to coach the Lady Devils for the next three seasons. He also assisted his daughter as coach at RMS from 2003-06 and at ZHS?through 2007.

Jim retired from teaching in 2004, but his handiwork can still be spotted around campus. He was also a founding member of the Hall of Fame. In late 2007, he passed away after a short battle with cancer. The James W. McCandlish Memorial Scholarship was founded in his honor to assist aspiring ZHS?art students with college costs.
