Let's face it, money talks, and an education beyond high school is the greatest way to empower yourself and realize a bright future. That education may be some focused training certification, an associate's degree, a bachelor's degree, or beyond.

Regardless of how far you continue your education beyond high school, now is the time to begin preparing for it.

1. Continue to save money, earn good grades, increase the amount of reading you do, think about career choices, and participate in extracurricular activities, including community service-you will want to keep track of the hours and the activities that you do. (Plan for Freshman and Sophomores)

2. Take the SAT and/or the ACT during the spring semester. Study guides for these exams are available in most bookstores, the public library and on the Internet. You can retake these exams, as often as they are offered, to improve your scores.

3. Visit colleges, attend college fairs, attend high school day on college campuses and write to colleges for catalogs and brochures.

4. Find out what academic majors correspond to your career interests and determine whether the schools you are interested in offer these majors.

5. Begin looking for scholarships for which you may qualify. Talk to your guidance counselor and visit Scholarship Central. Some scholarship providers require you to take the SAT or ACT by a certain date.

6. Make a preliminary list of colleges you may want to attend.
