Passages
to Freedom
Video
Passages
to Freedom is an historic reenactment of the
Underground Railroad in Southeastern Ohio. Step back in time to 1852 during the
stressful period of the Fugitive Slave Law, before the outbreak of the Civil
War. Visit with Frederick Douglass delivering his historic Fourth of July speech
in the Presbyterian Church in Putnam. Experience the dangers Underground
Railroad travelers faced and meet the Railroad conductors, including Nelson T.
Gant, who risked everything to help them. The incidents portrayed in this film
are based on well-authenticated accounts in the writings of Wilbur Siebert,
Thomas Gray, and Robert West Speer. This film brings to life our area’s
proud heritage of the Underground Railroad and features our local community
members.
