Keep a Candle in the Window

Songs of the Underground Railroad (c2001)

a CD to benefit the PURE Center

$20 each

Keep a Candle in the Window  was recorded to benefit the Putnam Underground Railroad Education (PURE) Center. The music presented is the songs that slaves sang to pass on the hope of freedom through the Underground Railroad. Liesta Walker's magnificent voice conveys the hidden messages and the deep feelings of the slave songs. Laura Benton's sweet soprano counters and compliments Liesta's.

The title comes from the poignant poem written by Casey Bolitho when she was 12 years old. Casey embodies the essence of the community's young people who, once exposed to the stories of the fugitive slaves' flight to freedom, begin to understand how the Underground Railroad affected lives then, now, and for all times. Chapa Johnson narrates "Keep a Candle in the Window,"  in the song, Steal Away.

Songs on this CD include:

  • Steal Away

  • Follow the Drinking Gourd

  • Soon I will be Done

  • Swing Low Sweet Chariot

  • Freedom Train A' Coming

  • The Devil He Was

  • Trying to Get Home

  • Oh Freedom

  • Mary Don't You Weep

  • Wade in the Water

  • Go Down Moses
