Muskingum County Recreation Center Board Authorizes Restructuring

Ohio University will assume financial leadership over MRC;
board constitution, MRC operations, staff, and pricing will remain unchanged

Zanesville, OH – At its meeting on Wednesday, July 26 the Muskingum Recreation Center (MRC) Board authorized a restructuring plan that will allow Ohio University to take a strong leadership role to ensure future financial stability.

Current financial projections of the MRC indicate certain University debt guarantees may be triggered if the University doesn’t help subsidize the MRC through debt restructuring expected in February 2020.

Located on the Ohio University Zanesville/Zane State Campus, MRC was originally established as a nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation with four members: Ohio University, Genesis Healthcare System, the Muskingum County Community Foundation (MCCF), and the Muskingum Family YMCA. These members will continue to hold seats on the MRC Board. All four partners will retain a place on the board and are committed to making the MRC a community driven Health and Wellness facility to benefit all resident of Muskingum county.

“The Muskingum Recreation Center facility provides significant opportunity for integrated programming, outreach, and research in the Zanesville community,” said MRC Board member and Ohio University Vice President for Finance and Administration Deb Shaffer. “This agreement will enable the Board to execute against its vision in the areas of rural and community health and community engagement.”

MRC was initially created in June 2009 to provide a facility in Zanesville to promote health, education, and recreation for the community. Ohio University, Zane State, and Genesis Healthcare each pay a corporate membership for their students and staff to utilize the facility as its wellness and recreation facility. The MRC also serves as the official facility for several Ohio University Zanesville athletic teams.

At the conclusion of the restructuring, MRC will be recognized as an Ohio University affiliated entity.

With this Board level restructuring, there will be no changes in the day to day operations, staff, current programs or membership fees at the MRC at this time.
