A few weeks ago College Now of Greater Cleveland announced that it has received a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service, which will be administered by ServeOhio, Ohio’s commission on service and volunteerism, which will fund the statewide AmeriCorps Ohio College Guide Program for the next year. Statewide, 70 College Guides will serve Ohio’s students, locally, this grant will allow Scholarship Central, the College Access Program at the Muskingum County Community Foundation, to host 5 AmeriCorps Ohio College Guides. This will be Scholarship Central’s fifth year hosting Ohio College Guides.
AmeriCorps Ohio College Guides are recent college graduates that serve alongside counselors and faculty in local high schools to provide a pipeline of new and current information about the college-going-process and experience. The guides help students with career exploration, college selection, scholarship searches and applications and all steps of the financial aid process.
Scholarship Central is currently looking for 5 recent college graduates to serve as Ohio College Guides in the area high schools. These positions require a bachelor’s degree and the interest in making a difference and impact in the community working with high school students.
This past school year, statewide, the Ohio College Guides served over 31,000 students, surpassing the program’s goal by over 15,000 students. Locally, College Guides served in several high schools including John Glenn High School, Maysville High School, Mid-East Career and Technology Center, Philo High School, and Zanesville High School. The College Guides were also involved in several community service projects, helping local students in the college-going-process.
