LEAVE A LEGACY™
MUSKINGUM COUNTY
LEAVE A LEGACY™ MUSKINGUM COUNTY is a community-wide effort to involve all in remembering their favorite charities when they make their wills or estate plans. While more than 70% of Americans give to charity each year, only 2.8% provide for charity when creating estate plans or when naming a beneficiary for their life insurance policies, annunities, or retirement plans. LEAVE A LEGACY MUSKINGUM COUNTY addresses this gap. LEAVE A LEGACY™ Muskingum County’s mission is to create a world-class community for our children and grandchildren through the gifts we give to charities in our wills and trusts or through other planned gifts. LEAVE A LEGACY™ MUSKINGUM COUNTY is an on-going campaign that asks all of us who live in Zanesville and Muskingum County to make planned gifts, whether large or small, to honor our families by making our community even better for the generations that follow.

Questions & Answers Q:) Do I have to include my wish to leave a gift to a specific organization in my will? A:) To be certain that the group receives the gift, you should state your intention in your will. Without a will, your property and finances are settled according to state laws, whether or not they coincide with family wishes.
Q:) Must I have an estate in order to leave a gift? A:) An estate is simply a word used to describe any property, money or personal belongings that you may have at the time of your death. Most people leave an estate when they die, even though they may not have a great deal of wealth. Anyone can arrange to leave a charitable gift from his or her estate.
Q:) Is there a simple way to leave a gift for an organization that I admire? A:) You can arrange for a gift several ways, the most common being through a will. Many people set aside a certain dollar amount. Others leave a percentage of their estate, or any assets left over after their family has been provided for. Some people give a charity something they own like a car, their home or business. Others name charities as beneficiaries of insurance policies, annunities, and retirement accounts.
Q:) Who can help me arrange for a gift? A:) If you have a professional you’re working with such as a financial planner, attorney, accountant or insurance agent, please talk with him or her about leaving a gift. A professional can tell you about the tax benefits of planned gifts. You can also call the charity for help.
Q:) How do I leave a gift in memory of a person or for a specified purpose? A:) A gift is a wonderful way to honor someone who has made a difference in your life. You may also want to give to a specific cause such as scholarships or to a new building. This kind of memorial gift can be arranged in your will or trust, the same way that you would leave a personal gift from your estate. You just need to make it clear that the gift is given in memory of a particular person or for a specific use.
Q:) Do I tell the charity I’ve left the gift? A:) This is up to you. Charities often like to know in advance so they can recognize your generosity.
Q:) How can I make a gift give forever? A:) You may choose to set up an endowment fund which will give to charity in your name or in memory of the person you wish to honor forever. Endowment funds never spend the gift you give -- only the earnings your gift generates . . . forever. More
